The veneration of Jesus Nazareno de San Jerónimo in the temple of La Merced has remained and increased over the years. Now known as Jesus of La Merced. His procession of Domingo de Ramos, is called “The Review”. On Palm Sunday, April 4, 1971, his eminent Reverend Monsignor Mario Cardenal Casariego, XVI Metropolitan Archbishop of Guatemala and Prelate of Esquipulas, consecrated it, being the first ceremony of this kind held in La Antigua Guatemala since the 18th century.
The procession of Good Friday, is called “The Penance”, and is characterized by representing the Sacred Way, with its red tunic without any type of adornment.
