The veneration towards Jesus Nazareno de San Jerónimo in the temple of La Merced has remained and increased over the years. Now known as Jesus de La Merced. His procession of Palm Sunday, is called “The Review”. On Sunday, April 4, 1971, his most reverend eminence, Monsignor Mario Cardenal Casariego, XVI Metropolitan Archbishop of Guatemala and Prelate of Esquipulas, consecrated it, being the first ceremony of this type held in La Antigua Guatemala from the eighteenth century.
The procession of Good Friday, is called “The Penance”, and is characterized to represent the Way Sacra, with its red tunic without any adornment.
